Illinois Worker Electrocuted While Trying to Repair Transformer

Storm Caused Transformer to Malfunction Before Fatal Accident
On July 11th, 2026, the Labor Tribune reported that a worker in Illinois had lost his life while trying to repair a transformer in Granite City. The worker was reportedly carrying out work on a transformer that had malfunctioned during a storm. As the worker attempted to shut off the transformer, he was fatally electrocuted.
Although first responders tried their best to save his life, they ultimately pronounced him dead after hours of life-saving efforts. The accident occurred inside a steel mill (specifically the cold mill). This is an area where high-voltage electricity helps thin out hot-rolled steel via rotating equipment and hydraulic pressure. The various hazards present in these areas make them some of the most dangerous workplaces in the country.
Investigators will now attempt to determine why the transformer malfunctioned in the first place. Although initial reports suggest that the transformer malfunctioned during a storm, it is not yet clear what specific aspect of the storm caused the issue. Critics are already pointing out that if certain safety precautions had been followed, this accident should have been theoretically impossible.
These precautions might include lockout procedures, remote shutdowns, and arc-flash protections. The victim was in his 60s, so he must have had ample experience of these situations. Some wonder whether this accident might have been the result of safety violations.
Some have also pointed out that an internal investigation conducted by the company that might have been responsible for these violations is inherently unreliable. The World Socialist Website calls OSHA fines a “negligible cost of doing business,” dismissing any real effect of government oversight.
The World Socialist Website also points out that many other fatalities have occurred at the same facility. This includes a fatal accident that killed a 42-year-old worker in 2017. Another worker in his 40s died in 2005 when he was crushed between moving parts. Steel has become an increasingly integral part of the US economy, especially after tariffs and the takeover of US Steel by Nippon Steel in 2025.
