CTA Workers in Chicago Continue to Face Serious Threats

WC_20

CTA workers in Chicago continue to face serious safety threats, with the latest incident claiming the life of yet another employee. Whether you’re recovering from injuries or grieving the loss of a loved one, a Chicago workers’ compensation lawyer may be able to help after a CTA attack or safety incident.

Police Continue to Search for Man Who Fatally Shot MTA Worker in Chicago

On August 20th, 2026, Chicago Police released video footage of a man they believe played a role in the June 29th shooting of a CTA worker. The fatal carjacking reminded the Chicago community that CTA workers face serious safety threats every day, even when they are simply trying to drive home after a long day of work.

The video footage shows a man in a gray hoodie with a paw print logo, along with matching gray sweatpants and black shoes. While the apprehension of this suspect may eventually bring the family of the victim a sense of justice, criminal charges can’t bring back the dead. The criminal justice system cannot help families pay for lost future wages, funeral costs, and unpaid medical bills, either.

CTA Union Calls for Better Worker Protections

With so many CTA workers facing violence on a daily basis, their union is calling for stronger safety policies and protections. In a news conference, the union specifically highlighted safety threats for CTA workers who work early morning and overnight shifts. These individuals seem to draw attention from criminals who prey on hardworking, honest workers.

CTA Workers Have Been Plagued by High-Profile Attacks

The June fatal shooting was only the latest incident in a string of similar attacks over the past few years. In August of 2025, a 70-year-old CTA worker was tossed onto the tracks by an assailant. She was hospitalized, but thankfully she avoided being struck by a train.

In February of 2025, a 36-year-old female CTA worker was assaulted by a man at the Racine Avenue Blue Line stop. This individual threatened to kill her, assaulting her with a traffic cone and smashing glass during the attack.

Recent studies have shown that CTA workers in Chicago face higher rates of violence than similar workers in other big cities, such as New York and Los Angeles. While these attacks are continuing to occur, they peaked in 2024.

If you were assaulted while walking to your car after work, the incident may be something of a “legal gray area.” Work with a workers’ compensation lawyer to fight for your rights, especially if your claim has already been denied.
