Series of Fires and Explosions Highlight Chicago Trucking Hazards

Truck_Fire

Trucking is one of the most dangerous industries in the United States, and truck drivers risk their lives each day to fuel our economy. Each day, many truckers suffer serious or fatal injuries on the road. Over the past few days, a series of truck accidents in Chicago have highlighted just how dangerous this job can be. Can a Chicago workers’ compensation lawyer help you pursue compensation after a truck accident injury?

Truck Driver Injured After Explosion in Chicago Suburb

In May of 2025, Yahoo News reported that a truck had exploded in the Chicago suburb of Addison. The detonation hospitalized the driver, and it caused a serious fire that required the attention of the local fire department. The explosion was so intense that a nearby house was evacuated due to a risk of collapse.

The explosion was reportedly caused by a leaking propane tank inside the truck. It is likely that this vehicle was transporting a considerable number of propane tanks, and this single leak may have detonated the entire cargo. The trucker is lucky to have survived, although the extent of his injuries is unclear.

Deadly Crash After Truck Rollover on I-55

Also in May, a truck rolled over on I-55, leading to at least one fatality. Authorities did not reveal whether it was the truck driver who passed away, or another motorist. Nevertheless, the entire highway was closed for quite some time after the incident, which was described by police as a “multi-vehicle accident.” The cause of the accident is also unclear, and there may have been more than one victim.

Can Truckers File Workers’ Compensation Claims?

Truckers can probably file workers’ compensation claims after crashes in Illinois. However, it is important to note that independent contractors are usually ineligible to file these claims. If you are an “owner-operator,” you may qualify as a contractor rather than an employee. Discuss this subject with your workers’ comp lawyer, as the exact definition of an “employee” can be surprisingly complex.

You may also have the opportunity to file a personal injury lawsuit after a truck accident. If your accident was caused by another negligent motorist, it may be preferable to sue them rather than file a workers’ comp claim. This is because a personal injury claim can provide additional compensation for non-economic damages.

Can a Workers’ Compensation Lawyer Help Injured Truckers?

After a truck accident, you might want to speak with an experienced workers’ compensation lawyer in Chicago. As long as your accident occurred as a result of your workplace duties, you can file a claim and recover compensation for medical bills and lost income. If your family member died while driving a truck for a living, you may also pursue death benefits. To learn more about these options, contact Connolly Injury Law today.
