Hit by Falling Objects at Work in Chicago: Can I Get Compensation?

FallingBoxes

Falling objects can cause serious injuries to workers in Chicago. Whether you’re working at a construction site or an office building, this hazard is surprisingly common. A recent incident at the University of Illinois involving falling bricks highlights this danger with shocking clarity, and workers have the right to pursue compensation after being struck. How can you get the compensation you need after being hit by falling objects at work? Could a workers’ compensation lawyer in Chicago help you get the financial support you need?

Workers Struck by Falling Bricks at University of Illinois

In July of 2025, CBS News reported that two workers had been struck by falling bricks at a construction project at the University of Illinois. The bricks fell from a residence hall and impacted the workers down below. Witnesses report seeing one victim being removed from the worksite on a stretcher while wearing a neck brace. Another worker was also removed from the scene in a neck brace, and both were transported by first responders to the nearest hospital.

The exact nature of these injuries is not clear. CBS News did not specify whether the neck braces were used as a precautionary measure, or whether the workers had suffered legitimate neck injuries. The workers were reportedly carrying out work in a suspended basket, and the falling bricks damaged the basket in such a way that they were left trapped inside. Officials say the pair were carrying out masonry work.

The real question is why the bricks suddenly fell from the building. Officials have confirmed that the building in question did not suffer storm damage prior to the incident. It is not clear whether another group of workers might have been operating above the victims, causing the bricks to fall. There is no word on whether the contractor violated any safety regulations, or whether they have a history of violations in the past.

Falling Objects Can Cause Traumatic Brain Injuries

Even if workers are wearing hard hats, falling objects can easily cause traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). A brick or similarly heavy object can impact workers with tremendous force, causing concussions, brain bleeds, and even penetrating wounds.

The economic and non-economic damages associated with TBIs are severe, and they include lost income, medical expenses, brain damage, emotional distress, and many other consequences.

Can a Workers’ Compensation Lawyer in Chicago Help Me Cover My Bills?

Whether you were struck by falling bricks, wrenches, or any other objects, you have the right to pursue fair compensation. These injuries can be life-altering, and you might be struggling with the consequences of a severe brain injury.
