In December of 2025, WGNTV reported that a CTA employee had suffered various injuries after a violent encounter with an unstable man on the Kimball Brown Line. The 32-year-old was cleaning rail cars with a broom and bucket when her cleaning items were stolen by a man. The man attempted to take the items into a train car, and the female employee asked him to return the broom and bucket.
The man reacted violently, first by verbally abusing the woman. The interaction then became violent as the woman tried to take her broom back. The man proceeded to kick her several times, giving her a pinched nerve in her leg, bruised ribs, and a bloodied hand.
This woman alleges that her supervisors only made the situation worse. Although a paramedic quickly arrived with an ambulance, her supervisor prevented her from leaving the station. According to this woman, some kind of work policy prevented her from leaving unless a more senior supervisor arrived at the scene and provided permission.
Workplace policies also allegedly required the woman to tell first responders that she was declining emergency medical services. After waiting for hours with significant injuries, a supervisor finally arrived and allowed the process to continue. However, she was still far from receiving medical attention.
More policies required her to take a breathalyzer and drug test first. In order to administer these tests, staff had to call in a third-party company. More hours passed, and the woman was still denied actual medical attention.
Finally, first responders transported her to a nearby hospital, where she spent the night. Weeks after the incident, the woman says she is struggling to pay rent due to the incident. She also requires physiotherapy for a pinched nerve that makes it difficult for her to walk. WGNTV states that she is in the middle of a “legal battle” with workers’ compensation.
Perhaps the most tragic detail of this story is the fact that the woman is involved in the CTA’s “Second Chance” program, which provides work opportunities to people facing work barriers. Many of these individuals are survivors of abuse.
