Chicago Chick-fil-A Stabbing Leaves One Worker Dead and Another Injured

A recent Chicago stabbing is a reminder of how dangerous restaurant work can be in Chicago. The attack left one worker dead and another injured. Fast food restaurants are more dangerous than many realize, both for patrons and employees. One can only hope that this incident prompts better security arrangements in the fast food industry, but this is perhaps overly optimistic. If you were attacked as a restaurant worker, you may want to contact a Chicago workers’ comp lawyer.
Murderer Came Back to the Same Restaurant and Tried to Stab Second Worker
According to officials, the attack began at around 3:00 AM when a man broke through the back door of an Oswego Chick-fil-A restaurant. The assailant then stabbed and killed a delivery worker inside the restaurant and fled. About two hours later, the murderer returned to the same restaurant and attacked a second worker. The worker was power-washing the exterior of the restaurant at the time alongside his mother.
Fortunately, the mother and son subdued the man until local police arrived. However, the maintenance worker suffered several stab wounds in the process and was hospitalized by first responders. Officials later revealed that although the maintenance worker suffered serious stab wounds, his condition eventually stabilized.
The deceased delivery driver was employed with a trucking company, and his body was only discovered when police arrived after the second attempted murder. Once they took the assailant into custody, they inspected the premises of the restaurant and discovered the dead body.
An investigation is underway. As of this writing, local police have not announced any criminal charges. A motive for the two separate attacks also remains unclear. Law enforcement praised the mother and son who fought back and held the assailant down until officers arrived.
Can I File a Workers’ Compensation Claim After a Stabbing?
If the stabbing occurred at work, you can probably file a workers’ comp claim. The workers’ compensation program applies to all workplace injuries, including those related to violent incidents. As long as you were engaging in normal work-related duties at the time of the incident, you can file a claim.
During the recent incident, the maintenance worker was power-washing a building when he was attacked. As a result, he will probably be eligible to file a claim. There are a few exceptions regarding independent contractors, horseplay, and intoxication. You may want to discuss these exceptions with a workers’ comp lawyer.
