Worker Falls to His Death at Chicago Construction Site

WorkerOnScaffold

On April 30th, 2026, multiple sources reported that a construction worker had fallen to his death in Chicago. This incident marks yet another worker fatality after a string of similar accidents over the past few weeks and months. If you have lost a family member to a fatal construction accident, consider discussing death benefits with an experienced workers’ compensation lawyer in Chicago.

Worker Falls Four Stories

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that the 57-year-old worker had been operating equipment on the roof of a school building in the suburb of Evanston when he accidentally fell off. He then plummeted four stories to the ground and suffered fatal injuries. The school building in question was part of the Northwestern University campus, and it is part of the NU’s Kellogg School of Management.

First responders rushed to the scene, but the victim had already passed away by the time they arrived. Officials say that they have every reason to believe the fatality was completely accidental, but they are continuing to investigate nonetheless.

Numerous construction accidents have occurred at projects involving Northwestern University in Evanston. In 2013, the son of a construction worker sued a general contractor for contributing to the death of his father. This accident involved a falling steel beam. In 2018, another construction worker died in Evanston after a crane accident. This incident also left a second worker in critical condition.

It is too early to tell whether any safety violations contributed to this recent fatality. However, one has to wonder how the construction worker managed to fall off the roof. Was he wearing fall protection? Was any netting in place? These are questions that investigators will undoubtedly try to address as they search for answers.

What Do Death Benefits Provide to Families of Deceased Workers in Chicago?

Death benefits can continue for up to 25 years, or they can provide a lump-sum payment for lost earnings. This lump sum can be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, and it may be crucial for surviving dependents who are left paying the bills. Workers’ comp death benefits should also cover the cost of a decent funeral.

Another option is to consider a wrongful death lawsuit, which may be possible in addition to your workers’ comp claim. A wrongful death lawsuit can provide higher levels of compensation, but it requires you to prove that a negligent party (such as a contractor) directly contributed to your loved one’s death.
