More Workers Die in Chicago Shootings

Over the past few weeks, numerous workers in Chicago have died due to gun violence. Two of these workers, a fruit vendor and a garden center employee, were simply trying to earn a living when they were gunned down. Man Shot While Working at Garden Center in Humboldt Park 

On April 28th, 2026, Block Club Chicago reported that a worker at a garden center had been gunned down in Humboldt Park. The 29-year-old employee was arranging plants at the storefront when a vehicle suddenly pulled up beside him. A shooter inside the vehicle then fired upon him and inflicted fatal wounds. Although first responders managed to transport him to Mt. Sinai Hospital in critical condition, he ultimately perished while receiving medical attention.

A local business owner told police that shootings in that particular neighborhood are rare. The man’s family says that he had a young son, who is now without a father. It is unclear whether this shooting was targeted or random, and police have not yet revealed whether they have any leads. The driver of the silver vehicle fled the scene without leaving much of a trace.

Fruit Vendor Dies in Little Village Shooting

A similar incident occurred four days prior when a fruit vendor was shot and killed in Little Village. The Chicago Sun-Times reports that the 46-year-old individual was one of four individuals struck by gunfire in the incident, but he was the only one who perished. The other three individuals, all women, survived with wounds of various severity. Like the garden center worker, the victim leaves behind a young child.

People in the neighborhood knew the victim as a “nice guy” who sold fruit from a simple cart. Police say three individuals in a white sedan carried out the shooting. Although surveillance cameras recorded them, officials say that they were all wearing hoodies and masks at the time. This may make it challenging for the authorities to catch the shooters. Like the earlier incident, it’s not clear whether this shooting was targeted or random.

Hopefully, the fruit vendor is an employee of another company. If he is an independent contractor who works for himself, it might be challenging for his family to file a workers’ compensation claim for death benefits.
